How To Have Lasting Happiness

logo

Greg Boyd We never experience more joy, and never feel more fully alive, than when we are sacrificially sharing with others.  Possessing things may bring momentary happiness, but only sacrificing for others can bring true, lasting joy.  The paradox of the Kingdom—and it applies to all of life—is that the best thing we can do for ourselves is to decide not to live for ourselves. -Gregory A. Boyd from his book The Myth Of A Christian Nation

  1. “Hi, my name is Dave. Please leave comments in English as this is the only language I am fluent in at the moment.”

That so makes me want to go to Babelfish and translate my comments into other languages. ;-)

Now, addressing the quote. I wonder how many people actually believe that and how many live it? How many think they are living it, but really aren’t?

When I was a kid my dad and I were in the YMCA’s Indian Guides, their version of the Boyscouts. I remember we had a ceremony where we were all supposed to bring one of our favorite items and burn it in a huge bonfire. I don’t think anyone actually brought a favorite item. I brought a silly little car that I never played with.

It’s well and good to give up wants like TV’s and other entertainment things, but I think true sacrifice is giving up needs. Going hungry so another can eat, being cold so another can be warm, etc.

That book has been on my Amazon wish list for a while. I still have a gazillion other books to read first though.

I added the translator in the sidebar and thought I should say something about not leaving your comment in Korean. But if you would really like to… :)

I have heard of people burning things that causes sin in their life like, well lets not talk about our sins.

I totally agree with you that true sacrifice is giving so another less fortunate can have.

I think my problem is that I don’t seek out these opportunities.

Right now I am checking out this book from the library and plan on purchasing it soon. Greg Boyd has quite a few good ideas. I hope to write a review on this book. I always have a problem writing about what I like (why and I blogging?).

If somebody ask me why the book is good I want to respond with “Because!” But I know that a review will have to be better than that.

  2. It’s funny, regarding liking things, I have this tendency to be internally offended (Meaning I don’t let it show) when someone dislikes something I really like. It can be books, music, movies, just about anything. i can relate to wanting to say “Because!” ;-)
